| Making his fifth straight appearance in the series, Randy Newman blends past musical motifs ("Youve Got a Friend in Me" from Toy Story and "When She Loved Me" from Toy Story 2, for example) in with plenty of new material on his score for Toy Story 5. As in past entries, he mixes the playful, exciting, tense, triumphant, suspenseful, and powerfully touching on a 75-minute soundtrack headlined by "I Knew It, I Knew You," a head-bobbing new song delivered by Taylor Swift and co-penned by Swift and Jack Antonoff. The other 72 minutes are all Newman, who sticks to melodic-percussive orchestral instrumentation and a male choir for a film that pits technology against the toys. "I Knew It, I Knew You" went to number one in countries including the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia but wasnt incorporated into the score due to its later arrival in post-production. ~ Marcy Donelson |
