Coventry Machinists Co. Ltd., Coventry
Coventry Machinists Co. Ltd., Coventry — 52-inch “Club”-type Ordinary Bicycle (Penny-Farthing), c.1880s, traditionally identified as an 1887 Club model.
A high-quality British sporting Ordinary with an approximately 52-inch (133 cm) driving wheel and 16.5-inch (42 cm) trailing wheel. The bicycle incorporates sophisticated lightweight construction characteristic of Coventry Machinists' upper-grade Club machines, including apparently hollow tapered front forks and backbone, distinctive V-section/hollow-type front rim or felloe, unusual butt-ended spoke construction, adjustable front bearing/crank assembly, front-wheel spoon brake, detachable/bent handlebar arrangement and sprung saddle support.
The bicycle has longstanding collector provenance identifying it as a Coventry Machinists Co. “Club” racing model of 1887, with the hollow forks, hollow backbone and lightweight wheel construction specifically cited as features of its sporting specification.
This attribution is consistent with documented Coventry Machinists Club-family machines. Contemporary and surviving examples demonstrate the company's use of hollow forks and backbone, specialized lightweight rims/felloes, proprietary spoke construction and advanced bearing arrangements. Later Club models also employed plain hollow forks and detachable bent handlebars.
A small “001” marking has been found on the brake-pivot/head assembly, together with other faint or presently undeciphered markings. Further examination for maker, model and serial markings is ongoing.
The original leather saddle survives but was damaged; a high-quality replacement leather saddle has been made and fitted while retaining the original saddle and original metal saddle-support assembly.
