A special collaborative cardigan from uniform experiment × Keith Haring, released around 2011, with an original retail price of approximately ¥33,000.
Today, collaborations between fashion labels and internationally recognized artists are everywhere, but this type of crossover still felt particularly fresh in the early 2010s. The combination of uniform experiment’s sophisticated Tokyo streetwear aesthetic with Keith Haring’s instantly recognizable artwork made this a highly distinctive and popular collaboration at the time.
uniform experiment was launched in 2008 by Hirofumi Kiyonaga of SOPH. and Hiroshi Fujiwara of fragment design. The label became known for taking traditional menswear and introducing elements drawn from street culture, music, art and contemporary design. Pieces from this early period now offer a fascinating snapshot of the Japanese fashion scene of the late 2000s and early 2010s.
This cardigan perfectly represents that philosophy.
The foundation is an understated navy V-neck wool cardigan with a clean and sophisticated appearance. Bright blue Keith Haring figures provide the contrast: a small graphic is positioned on the front, while multiple dancing figures extend across the lower back.
From the front, the cardigan appears restrained and elegant. Turn around, however, and the energetic Keith Haring artwork completely changes its personality. A small UE + KEITH HARING label near the back hem further identifies this as an official collaborative piece.
The fabric is 100% wool, giving the cardigan a refined texture and making it far more sophisticated than a typical graphic garment. The relatively fine knitted construction works beautifully with both traditional and casual styling.
For a smart look, combine it with a white Oxford shirt, grey trousers and black leather shoes, allowing the vivid blue artwork to function as the only accent color. For something more relaxed, simply wear it over a white T-shirt with faded denim and sneakers.
Nearly fifteen years after its original release, this piece has become interesting not only as a Keith Haring collaboration but also as an archive item from an important period of uniform experiment and Japanese street fashion.
Highly recommended for collectors and fans of uniform experiment, SOPH., fragment design, Hiroshi Fujiwara, Keith Haring and early-2010s Japanese streetwear.
