九州の最高峰でもある宮之浦岳を擁し、洋上アルプスとも称される屋久島。
スギの自然分布で南限とされるこの島に、屋久杉が分布しています。
しかし、そのすべてを屋久杉と呼ぶのではなく、樹齢１０００年を越えるもののみを屋久杉と呼び、それに満たないものはコスギとして区別して呼んでいます。
その屋久杉の代表が縄文杉であるのは皆さんご存じの通りです。
縄文杉といえば巨樹、巨樹といえば縄文杉とまで言われるくらい有名となった縄文杉だが、もちろん日本のスギの中では最大の幹周りを誇るスギの王者であると共に、日本を代表する巨樹の一本であると言っても過言ではないでしょう。
縄文杉は１９６６年屋久町役場の岩川貞次氏により紹介されました。
周辺に生育するスギの大きさから導き出された樹齢が約７２００年との結果が導き出され、縄文時代からの生き残りという理由から、縄文杉として呼ばれることとなるのです。
